Wrinkles - What You Should Do About Them

by Amanda Beaty

As we age we look in the mirror and see new wrinkles in our skin for time to time. We think oh no a new wrinkle and wonder what to do about them. To have the proper knowledge to prevent or at least help control them we need to know what causes them first. So I will give you a little bit of background on what causes them before we examine what treatment to use for them.

The top layer of skin ages and decreases in thickness. With this thinning of the top layer (called the epidermal layer) the skins cells in the layer are not as adhesive which helps the skin retain less moisture. These cells do not reproduce as easily when we get older which causes the skin not to heal as easily. Wrinkles result as the epidermal layer ages but this is not the only reason. The dermal layer of the skin also needs to be discussed.

Thinning also occurs in the dermal layer. It’s decreased collagen due to being unable to create it as much and the elasticity of the skin wears out. These changes in the skin layers cause lines and other problems. The glands that are sebaceous also decrease in producing sebum and we wind up with less glands that are called sweat glands which leads to dryness. There are many creams on the market that help combat wrinkles. There are correcting creams, tightening creams and even creams for instant face lifts. There are also heavy duty moisturizing creams that help improve the dryness of the skin. Try one of the creams before trying an expensive medical procedure to see if it works.

There are plenty of over the counter solutions for wrinkles today. You can buy a cream to help erase them, or one to make the skin more firm, and there is actually creams that say they are for a facelift. Moisturizers are quite effective these days too with all the maximum strength ones out there. Consider applying one of the creams in place of more drastic solutions as performed by medical professionals.

Getting injected with botulinum toxin type A is one of the many medical ways to treat wrinkles. This treatment does not appeal to me due to the fact that I hate injections of any kind. Another treatment that is available is glycolic acid. I would research and learn about these and other medical procedures before having them done. Also investigate who and where you are thinking about having these procedures performed.

Smoking should be avoided for the sake of your health and skin. The blood vessels constrict during smoking disabling the skin from getting correct oxygen. Carbon monoxide can increase due to smoking which makes the skin react badly. This can increase the amount of free radicals, which can cause the skin to age faster.
